The Old Brickfields is a wild piece of land on the banks of the River Medway. At low water, the hulks of abandoned ships are a visual reminder of the livings made from the water at Lower Halstow up until the 20th century.
Hulked on film
This film is part of the pilot Hulked project which took place in the autumn of 2022. The film was shot around and within the hulk of the Surrey barge which was left to rot on Glass Bottle Beach in Lower Halstow, Kent, UK.
The piece was conceived by Anna Braithwaite who also performed in the film and created the soundtrack, with additional music by Jeremy Scott.
'Hulked' was filmed and edited by Matt Rowe and was informed by the research Anna undertook with project partners Ed Gransden of Tiller & Wheel, Dr. Jeremy Scott (University of Kent) and Prof. Katharine Cockin (University of Essex).
